UGG not so Ugly

I don't know about what the most popular shoe in your city. But here in L.A., people sure do love Uggs. Everyone from Milfs to tweens to little babies seem to own a pair of Uggs.

Personally, I have always thought that they are the ugliest shoes to ever come out just behind the crocs. I don't care if people say they are comfortable, they are just tacky.

It wasn't until I went to a party that I found out that Uggs makes all types of shoes. I saw a girl wearing a cute pair of boots made out of what seem to be knitted wool. I fell in love with them and asked what brand they were so I could get me a pair. I was a bit shocked when she told me they were Uggs. So much so that I had to ask again to make sure that I heard her right.

So Uggs does have a style that wasn't so ugly. Who would have thought? So I now I'm a proud owner of The Classic Cardy. They set me back about $148, but I consider it a good investment for a pair of boots. They are hip and funky at the same time. Just the way I like my shoes. Not only are they cute, but you can wear them long or turn them into a fashionable ankle boot that everyone seems to like these days. If anyone would have told me that I would be a UGG fan, I would have laughed in their face. Look who's laughing now!

What's Your Sex and The City Style?

This past weekend, I finally saw the anticipated movie, Sex and the City. I realize I'm a couple of weeks behind here, but bear with me. I armed myself with tiny airplane bottles of liquor and juice boxes (because, really, who can watch these four women and NOT crave a makeshift cosmo) and excitedly entered the theatre.

The movie, as I'm sure you all know, did not disappoint and I found myself wishing my own nerdy gay friend, who is strikingly similar to Stanford Blatch, was there seeing the movie with me. Now, having my own Stanford most definitely makes me a Carrie.

Ladies, go ahead and admit it; we all do it. We have all, at one point or another, compared ourselves to one of the four characters on the show who kick-started this sexual revolution. That being said, I am soooooo Carrie. I am a writer so obsessed with shoes that I write for a fashion site on the topic. C'mon! You don't get any more Carrie than that. Well, you know, outside of the other ten bloggers on Pump it Up! But, I have more on my side here, if you require more proof…I lived on the Upper East Side in a tiny studio apartment, which was way overpriced for my salary. I would routinely choose to skip dinner for a week in order to afford a pair of shoes. I consider Vogue classic literature. I have a nose on the larger side and frizzy hair that becomes even harder to contain in humidity. I even used to write a dating column based on my personal experiences. I totally win the Carrie likeness contest, hands down! Everything about her and her life fascinates me; even her flaws are beautiful. And her shoes—oh, the shoes!

Ok, I'm about to admit something on this site that I probably shouldn't since we tend to focus on couture…but I think you will all understand. I am in the Target shopping phase of my closet collection. I have accepted this about myself. No, really, I have! Because I firmly believe that if Carrie Bradshaw were a real person living on a writer's salary, she too would take the journey to Brooklyn for the Target shopping experience. Not to mention, with the amount of designers emerging with exclusive Target lines, she may find it just as hard to resist. But, I digress.

Spend More, Pay Less

My, how have times have changed in the fashion world! It seems like only yesterday when buying Payless shoes was a fashion no-no. So when did Payless became so popular? Just a few years ago, no fashionista in her right mind would be caught dead in their shoes. They were not cute, cheaply made and took about 3-4 months to break them in so that your feet wouldn't hurt.

Yes, Payless was just not the place to find good shoes. But now, Payless has become so cool that even those with great fashion sense are starting to shop there. No longer is there shame that comes with this store. People are proud that they got chic shoes for a low price. Payless is following in the footstep of Target's 'go collection', using hot designer to increase their notoriety as well as win over the hearts of the snobby fashionistas.

Designers like Alice & Olivia and Lela Rose have all created a special collection for the brand. They became so popular that the collection was flying off the shelves and onto the fashion forward's feet. Even style Guru Patricia Field, who created the wacky but chic wardrobe from "Sex and the City" and "The Devil Wears Prada" has created not one, but two collections for Payless.

I'm just happy people have realized that you don't have to spend hundreds of dollars to get cute shoes. Just run down to your closest Payless and load up. You know you want to.

Golf - Why Not?

Let me just say right up front, I am not a golfer. My entire life, I have known people who golf and I just don’t get it. The whole idea seems a bit silly - chasing a little, white ball all over-usually dressed in ridiculous clothes. Seriously, the closest I come to golf is the miniature variety. And that is only occasionally, because it is hard to look sophisticated holding a tiny little golf club.
Okay, okay truth be told, I am not at all athletic. Unless you count prowling the stores looking for hot deals on cute clothes; you have to admit that does require a certain amount of stamina and endurance…yet, I fear it will never be an Olympic sport. (If it ever is though WATCH OUT!)

My main gripe with sports has always been that they require you to wear such unappealing footwear. Or so I thought, until I spied the beautiful new golf shoes from Stella McCartney for Adidas. Yes, these shoes make me rethink my stance on golfing. I can see myself at the clubhouse sipping a drink while showing off these fabulous shoes!! Not actually out on the green putting or whatever it is that you do. Just in the clubhouse. I mean I certainly wouldn’t want to get these shoes dirty!!

The Garbato has everything a golf shoe needs, even the cleats, just packaged so much more attractively. You certainly wouldn’t be ashamed to be seen in these shoes. Why, you might wear them for more then golfing-although the cleats could pose a problem. I might even wear them out shopping, and look out if you try to cut in line in front of me! One little tap from my Stella clad foot and you will hop to it! Back to your place in line.

Now, if I do decided to take up golfing, I would naturally need an equally fabulous outfit to go with my shoes. Oh goody, a shopping trip. Shopping, as you know, can be long and arduous. It really is hard work to find the perfect outfit. Sometimes I am not sure that I can continue on because my feet ache so!

Thank god for Stella!! Again, this woman has thought of everything. She has designed a fantastic, multi-purpose trainer-the Ganlen. In your hunt for the best sale, these shoes will give you an edge, keeping your feet nice and comfortable, allowing you to shop longer and look fabulous doing it.

These shoes are so hot, you can’t wear them with just any old thing. More shopping is required; it is a vicious circle, but one I am willing to go through in the name of fashion.

Forget the Flip-Flops - Try Fit-Flops!

With swimsuit season upon us, wouldn't it be great to get in shape (or stay in shape) without changing any of our daily routines? I’ve been seeing ads for Fitflops posted all over New York. According to the advertising, Fitflops will trim your legs and buttocks.

Fitflops come in many different designs and colors – I would opt for a pair that doesn’t say Fitflop on them. To me it seems as though one is saying, “Check out my great legs, oh, and beware of my flabby bum.”

The great thing about these flip-flops is that they seem to have reduced pain from sciatica, foot ache, and back discomfort in those who swear by them. Some of the styles are cute and well-worth checking out, especially if they will make you feel better.

How do they work?

“FitFlop midsoles incorporate patent-pending micro-wobbleboard technology, to give you a workout while you walk.”

In other words, the midsole literally has a flexible material within that moves in order to vary the thickness of the shoe at different points, making your leg attempt to regain its footing. When you wear normal flip-flops, the foot stabilizes itself and stays that way all day. With Fitflops, the midsole is constantly wobbling and your foot readjusting itself to regain balance, thus working muscles in the process. This change allows for greater use of muscles attributed to balance. These muscles normally do not get much of a workout in traditional regimes. There is a warning attached that reminds everyone that this is a fitness tool and to not wear them all day from the start, as that could call excess muscle soreness. Walk Like a Diva

I love shoes. I have an entire collection in my closet. But I have failed to master the art of walking in heels. I remember when I was little and used to stomp around the house in my mom’s sliver like a wee supermodel of the suburbs. Sadly, today, I still look like a child in my mama’s heel. I know I can walk gracefully in them, but I am a bit clumsy and when I’m out, if something goes wrong, I want to be able to run. So here I am, a girl with pretty heels that collect dust in my closet.

I knew I needed to get over my heel phobia. If I was going to keep on buying heels, I was damn well going to master the art of high heel walking. So when I was invited to Il Primo Passo’s “Walk like a Diva” taught by the fabulous Queen Jazzman, I was game. She might not be Miss Jay from America's Next Top Model, but she’s the next best thing. That girl could do everything in heels and I wanted to learn as well. I was determined to turn my baby steps into a cool strut even if it killed me. Ok, I wouldn’t go that far, but I was willing to have hurt feet and a few blisters for a while.

We each got numbers so that Jazzmun could assess our walk. The mantra for the class was that the walk was not about us, but rather the shoes. One by one, we all showed off our walk while the rest of the class clapped and encouraged each other. It was so much fun! Talk about girl power. Everyone was getting good feedback. Then it was my turn, and I was a little nervous about showing off my sad walk in front of others, but then again, these girls are here to learn the same thing. So I let all my nerves go and showed my walk.

Too bad, I didn’t make it that far. Queen Jazzmun had me walk a few times. Damn, I knew I was bad, but not that bad. I felt like the worst witch of the heels class. The queen was nice about it and she really wanted to help me with my walk. I was given clear cut instruction- take my hand out of my pockets, look ahead and submit to the shoes. It was not about me, it was all about the shoes. And when I did submit, I got a new wave of confidence that I never had before. I was strutting in my heels and it felt great!

It was not just me, the entire class was doing their thing. We were posing, twirling and stomping like we were all models in a runway show. We even had an audience from customers from the neighbouring Pinkberry, who were giving us stares and giggles. But it didn’t bother me; I liked an audience by then. I had gotten drunk with my new power and I wanted to show off. It was funny. I was finally walking in heels for the last hour and I was getting cocky. But I didn’t care, it felt so good. Move over Kate and Naomi, there’s a new diva hot on your heels. And she goes by the name of Yolanda Evans.

After the class was over, I stomped my way out of that store like I never stomped before. I was fierce and I loved it. Finally, I could walk in heels. No more baby wobble steps for me, I upgraded to a super strut. My heels in my closet no longer collect dust; they are getting wear and tear from me showing them off.

Look out world, it’s me, Yolanda, and I own these shoes. Or better yet, these shoes own me. So I just submit and let them lead.

Fashionable Summer Sneaker Trends

So of course we want to be always fashionable, even if we are breaking a sweat to look better for beach time or for that special someone. In any case, here are the latest trends in footwear that are actually also functional to workout and not only to look good.

Designers with functional fashionable shoe collections for the summer:

PRADA: Their sport collections is absolutely impeccable and beautiful. They are good for workouts at the gym or long walks. If you have the bank account to back this up, these are a definate yes.

PUMA by RUDOLPH DASSLER: Dassler has amazed us with his unique, chic and yet functional designs, from everything from shoes to wear out to a night club to shoes that are actually comfortable for a good old fashion workout. I believe these are fairly priced in comparison to other designers, and if you can be subtle about it, you can even also use them to go out at night with your friends.

ADIDAS Y-3: This collection has, by far, exceeded all our expectations, with a very retro-chic yet futuristic design. Y-3 has shoes that are extremely comfortable for everyday workouts and even hardcore workouts like boxing or hiking.

REEBOK: To follow up on other major brands, designers, and the current fashion trends, Reebok is releasing their Classic Leather shoes that contributed to Silas 10th Anniversary collection. These shoes are not only functional for working out, but they have that old-school, trendy, hipster look.

Once you've chosen the perfect shoe for you, do not forget to take good care of them and make sure that they are comfortable for your kind of feet. Just because they are designer shoes or are on the cover of L'UOMMO Vogue, it doesn't mean they are necessarily suitable for you. Ask your trainer or your shoe sales associate for an expert opinion. Wearing the wrong shoes can be bad for your health and cause serious injuries.

Outdoor Season Snuck Up On You?

I’ve been with my boyfriend for almost two years. He’s outdoorsy and I’m a city girl. I haven’t owned a pair of sneakers since high school! What do I do when my boyfriend wants to take me trail hiking or on a romantic walk around a lake?

I knew it was time to invest in sneakers. I have large feet, as some of you have read – size 10, and sneakers make my feet look even bigger. Also, I really don’t like the way sneakers and socks look with shorts on my body. I think it’s an awkward look. I feel others can pull it off much better.

I tried on a couple of pairs of sneakers and found that Pumas look best. They have less of a footprint and aren’t nearly as wide as other sneakers so they give a nice line to the foot and I don’t feel embarrassed by my large pieds. I still won’t wear them with shorts.

Another type of sneaker to invest in is from Cole-Haan. Cole-Haan works with Nike to make a line of comfortable, sneaker-like casual shoes. They also have a terrific line of dress shoes. FYI – Cole-Haan is revitalizing the sneaker department so many of their offers may be on sale over the next few weeks. I bought their newest addition, and though it looks great, you really do have to break them in. The backs of the shoe come up past the ankle and hit in a tender area, causing blisters. Wear with thick gauge socks at first and then, once the sneakers start to feel comfortable, decrease the thickness of the sock and they should be fine.

Stella McCartney has paired up with Adidas. I had a pair of Adidas sneakers in high school and, I have to say, these look rather similar. They also conform more to the shape of the foot leaving a slimmer silhouette; but I am a Puma girl.

Too bad Juicy Couture doesn’t have sneakers! Their ballerinas are very cute.

The next dilemma – hiking boots!! I looked at L.L. Bean’s website for day hikers. They looked huge! The only ones I really liked were $109, which was more than I was willing to spend. How often am I going to go hiking anyway? Also, to find boots that fit properly, you are told to purchase them a half size to a full size bigger than what you would normally wear!

I think I’ll put off looking for hiking boots a little longer. At least I now have two pairs of sneakers!

In Memory of YSL: The Thigh High Boot

This month focuses on remembering the couture legend and his ground-breaking innovations.

Before his unfortunate passing June 1, Saint Laurent had been reclusive from the fashion industry since his retirement in 2002 (he had sold the company to Gucci Group three years prior). He cited one of his reasons for this decision as the belief that he had nothing in common with today's world of fashion. Yet his influence helped create the sex appeal currently on the scene, from head to toe.

Lest we forget his edgy, and most emulated, contribution to footwear, harken my words: the black leather thigh-high boot.

Possibly inspired by mens' tall riding and work boots of previous eras, YSL originally introduced the heightened creations with tight-fitting pants and his famous Safari jackets. 1960s celebrities and fashionistas alike rocked these boots in party-worthy form, as a finishing touch to miniskirts and other mod attire.

Present Day: Slinky, sky-high styles retain their status as a fun and feral addition to pencil-length skirts, dresses with coats and skinny jeans. From Sex and the City's on-screen wardrobe to Hayden Panettiere's highly photographed peacoat-and-boots combo, the thigh's still the limit.

It's a surprisingly classy, sexy look when complemented with appropriate attire. Often thought to be exclusively for slim legs, these boots (like any pump or sandal) are available in materials and cuts that are wearable by most any physique.

Green Footwear?

The green ideology began not in the 1970s or 1960s but as far back as ancient China. It began as concern over pollutants in the air and water. Over time, this concern has reached a stronghold in the American awareness.

However, when capitalism mixes with green ideology, something happens. We have green architecture. I happen to like the idea of living well without harming those around me. I am a big supporter of LG appliances. They are great.

When I finally decide where I would like to live as a full time citizen, I will be looking for green architecture.

There is something about being green that is very appealing and, dare I say, trendy. If caring for Mother Earth is a trend, I hope it lasts a very long time.

There is one aspect to being green that will forever be in my memory – hemp. Hemp belts. Organic, itchy fabrics that felt like wool crossed with a Brillo pad. All of these clothes and accessories looked horrible. Of course, there wasn’t glitterati back then that supported green ideology like there is today.

Are there green items, shoes specifically, which could be chic?

A visit to Greenloop.com was all it took to peak my interest in the green movement as it relates to footwear. I happen to like the sleek offerings of the Melissa shoes. The Charmone shoes are interesting – though I would put them in the category of museum piece more readily than footwear. In other words, I appreciate the shoes for their creativity and specificity, but I would never be able to wear them. They just are not part of the classic style that I embody.

Would a change in my footwear lessen my carbon footprint significantly? I doubt it. However, every little bit helps when you are protecting Mother Nature. Does anyone know of a great source for green shoes?

Young Designer's Market

I was taking my normal Saturday stroll around the West Village with my boyfriend yesterday, when I noticed a brightly colored and aesthetically pleasing sign on Hudson St (between Christopher St and Grove St).

The sign read: Young Designers Market. Two things popped into my mind at that moment; one – "Oh my god, what an amazing place to buy something else that I can't afford and have no room for," and two – the episode of Sex and the City where Carrie meets Aiden at the furniture showroom.

It's unfortunate that I already have a boyfriend…what a wonderful introductory relationship story that would make! "Our eyes met from across the room, me holding a vintage pair of strappy sandals. He strolls over to me, runs his hand along the buckle and in a sexy Italian accent states, 'I bought the leather for zese shooze using ze money I made from my vineyard een Sardinia.' I sighed, grabbing my boyfriend's hand and dragged him into the cool air conditioning of the marketplace. I made a mental note to mention that I was a writer in the case that they may give me a discount. (Yes, just like Carrie claimed to be a designer to get the furniture discount from Aiden. Only, I wasn't lying.)

This market was absolutely wonderful! It was filled mostly with jewelry designers and artists specializing in silkscreen. I was thoroughly impressed with the talent there. Among the many jewelry stands, there was also a vintage clothing designer, a shoe collector (as pictured), and a hat maker. I even bought a lovely necklace with a (gasp!) shoe on it to commemorate my latest writing gig here at modofacile.com!

Fashion Victim?

Ever feel as though you are veering from fashionable to fashion victim?

Every summer, I start off the season wearing my strappy sandals. Every August my feet are so sore, cut up, bumpy and achy that I end up only wearing flip-flops. Fashion victim? You betcha!

Why endure the pain? In China women bind their daughters’ feet because small feet are desirable and sexy. I won’t go into the procedure, but it is painful.

Instead of causing our feet and tendons undue trauma, try these tips:

Have a pair of flats (I have ballet slippers) underneath your desk in case your feet start to bother you. Depending on your office, you could even have those beautiful beaded slippers or mules hiding in a drawer.

Wear different high heel heights. I love my skyscrapers, but I also like a mid-range pump and a flat shoe, or a kitten-heeled mule. Changing the heights of your heel actually helps to work out the Achilles tendon. If you always wear skyscrapers, you run the risk of shortening your Achilles tendon which may have to be corrected through surgery.

Buy heels that fit properly. I have this terrific pair of Orsay pumps. They have a high heel and every time I put them on my foot slides forward too far. If they weren’t open-toed I’d have much more pain from them than I do.

Carry your shoes with you while you wear sneakers in the car or on the train. There are so many great pairs of designer sneakers out there – and so many designers borrowing from sneaker technology. Cole-Haan has Nike Air offerings. Stella McCartney is working with Adidas. I happen to be partial to Pumas.

For more stability when you walk, try wearing a thicker heel.

As you age, you lose the fat padding on the bottom of your feet. This padding is literally a cushion that will lessen the pounding from the pavement. In order to make up for this, use silicone inserts or gel strips in your shoes. Dr. Scholl’s would be fine. Try his moleskin for blisters.

A trick I learned from a rancher in Texas – use scotch tape on the inside of your shoe (cowboy boot) where the friction is. Literally tape up the spot that rubs against your skin to make a smooth, cool surface. This actually works and is a great office quick fix. That’s also why all the thongs on my sandals have tape around them and my toes never have blisters!

If you take care of your feet, they will be sure to take care of you.

Jimmy Who? Jimmy Choo!

Jimmy Choo was born in Penang in 1961 to a family of shoemakers - it's no wonder that he created his first pair at age 11. In 1986, he opened a workshop in Hackney, East London, where he began crafting luxury shoes. An eight page spread in Vogue magazine in 1988 catapulted him to superstar!

For Fall/Winter, look forward to seeing stiletto pumps of every variety – plain (Empire), with cut-outs (Merrit [leather] and Margo [snakeskin]), with pleated fabric and crystal embellishments (Simi), and a silk/satin Dorsay shoe (Pillow). For Spring/Summer 2008, there is an open-toed Mary Jane (Advent) and a sexy petrol patent peep toe (Eliza) that I would love to own.

Ballet flats are still very hot for the upcoming season. Jimmy Choo makes Went, Wise, Bob, Willow, and Wood. He also has Lychee – a flat, leather shoe.

For the older fashionistas who prefer a flat, I would suggest the above. However, I have found that Jimmy Choos are not the most comfortable shoes, so if you are wearing them on hot days, please either buy a size larger than you would normally wear or have Band-Aids on hand. (Humidity will cause the feet to swell and excess moisture causes skin to be very soft – hence we easily blister in the summer.)

FYI: All Jimmy Choo shoes are not available on the Internet. There are a select few that are available only in the boutiques. Also, there seem to be very few sizes available via the website. However, their website is a great way to find deals from past seasons.

My suggestion - if you are looking to purchase shoes from seasons past, please buy classic looks that won't go out of style. In other words, don't invest in Panama or Saffron. They are obviously Jimmy Choo and they are not from the current year. For 2008/2009 you may find he has done something more exciting with other luxe fabrics or bolder, brighter colors.

Cankles? Accentuate Instead!

We all know how to dress to appear thinner, right?—every woman above a size 5 does! The basics: Solid, monochromatic colors are slimming; busy patterns make you appear short and squat. Dark colors hide problem areas, while light colors accentuate the more positive features. However, calves can be a problem area that tends to get passed over when talking about body image. And now with the summer season rolling in and bringing with it skirts and sundresses, you have even more of a reason to be conscious of this body part. Here are some ways to make your calves and ankles appear thinner, simply by wearing the correct shoes!

Tennis shoes have the tendency to cut your leg off at the ankle, accentuating the thickest areas. Always wear the lowest cut socks you can stand (some people hate the way they feel, I know) and find a sport shoe that cuts lower below your ankle.

A personal trick I use to make my calves appear thinner is to apply a gradual self-tanner to the sides of my calves. This creates fake definition and from the front makes them appear more narrow. (I also do this on my abs to create a faux six-pack). It's the equivalent to using make up on your face for highlights and low-lights.

Anytime you can, wear a mule or backless shoe. The long visual of skin all the way down to your heel creates a sexy line and makes your ankle appear thinner.

I, personally, have very thick ankles. Wearing straps that cut horizontally across my ankle accentuates the thickest area and makes my legs appear shorter. Shorter is never better. For this reason, I tend to wear straps that circle high at the back of my ankle and then dip below to my foot in the front. This creates longer lines making me seem taller and in turn creating a longer and thinner calf and ankle.

As a general rule, never wear any shoe (or shirt, or skirt or pants, for that matter) that ends at the thickest point of your body. For example, if you have chunky calves, never wear a boot that ends in the middle of your calf. Opt for the boot that ends just below your knee at the narrowest point. Also be certain that the boots are not too tight or you may end up with a muffin top…

Matching your shoes to your hose or tights, when wearing a skirt or a dress, will also help your legs look thinner. If your skirt is also in a matching color, you'll look thinner from the waist down.
And lastly, your legs will look instantly longer, leaner and more defined in heels! They don't have to be terribly high, but do remember that the higher the heel, the thinner you look. Wearing a heel forces the calf muscle to work harder, therefore creating a more defined look.

Unfortunately, these cankles of mine will probably never go away, but I can do everything in my power to keep them from ruining the looks of my beautiful Manolos!

Patent and Satin and Bold, Oh My!

Pastels, step aside. From sky-high strappies to jeweled flats, the latest footwear trends are noticeably risque... even more so than before.

High-fashion footwear has always been a great way to show off one's inner vamp (or in the case of peacock sandals, inner showgirl): Only this Summer, styles have reached an all-time height of heel, jewels, strategic straps and strong leather varieties. Demure pink patent leather and all-over white have faded from the scene: Apple-cherry reds are shown in woven Napa or mixed with goldtone hardware; purple is now a steady warm-weather staple; high-gloss hot pink patent says go to glow.

The season's ladylike shift dresses and Bermuda short-suits, also in bold shades, mean business when paired with contrasting color shoes and accessories. Dolce & Gabbana paired their purple satins with red patent platforms and matching belts. Dior's red nappa t-strap sandal, gold-studded with O-ring cutouts, is a sure bet solid white or low-key red/white ensemble. As always, the trick is to show off the brazen footwear with more classic suiting or denim by day. Little black dresses light up with a colored stiletto siren, but proceed with caution: too low-cut + high pump is streetwalker apparatus. Keep it chic when showing off your not-so-innocent side.

From plats to flats, the gleaming brights take a walk on the beach thanks to Juicy Couture's crystal-detailed patent sandals, as well as fuchsia suede with hardware accents. These make the ideal addition to terrycloth and bikinis, matched up with designers' new patent totes and wristlets. Laid-back glamour made for these days of sand and beach bars. These trends will also be seen in Fall 2008 with collections of satin crepe pumps in lipstick red, jungle green and royal, in addition to deep purple. Even omnipresent black gets bondage-worthy with unique strap arrangements, cutouts and peep toes. Adding smooth leather takes the subtlety out of suede. Step ahead, and step out in the best. One thing's for sure: You won't be the lady to mess with!

Mary Jane Gets Her Big Break: Summer and Fall 2008

Mary Jane is fully grown, stepping out to Summer 2008 and soon Fall 2008 in a very new light... glowing. The oh-so-daring Dior, Christian Louboutin and the rest vamped up this once-quiet classic: Triple- to triangle straps, metallic patent leathers and special-effect suede.

Miu Miu showcases summer's patent leather craze with metallic gold-strapped red patent Teacup Mary Jane platform pump; Jimmy Choo's open-toe hot pink Lumiere pump lets vixen divas show off a serious pedicure. For fall, Christian Louboutin added a copper-streaked effect to a black patent one-strap version, resulting in a shimmering option for fall. Dior gets fetish-y with smooth grain leather against Italian suede for a black-on-black version, complete with side cutouts: Result is the Cabaret Mary Jane (reminiscent of attire seen in Chicago). Last but never least, Marc Jacobs created a two-tone suede and metallic version of this classic that gives a crackled effect.

The faint of heart fear not: Jacobs distressed-leather open toe varieties are excellent in down-to-earth colors; even a few flat versions can be found in sold grain leathers. Many collections capitalized on Fall's newest neutral, Taupe. Yves Saint Laurent showcased this shade's soft-spoken sexiness along with basic black. Manolo's light-colored patents and metallic are subtle enough for a workwear ensemble. A childhood favorite's entered a serious stage of dress-up: Shine on!

Back In Black

There’s a fashion faux pas that I’ve always wanted to comment on – wearing black shoes as a staple, regardless of the other colors in your outfit.

I think the shoe industry is getting tired of watching young, gorgeous, ladies walking around in pale linen sheaths with requisite mottled scarves in a variety of either pastels or burnt oranges sporting black shoes and black purses. Perhaps this explains the rise of candy-colored shoes, and the quandary those of us needing black shoes are faced with.

Please treat your shoes with the same rules you would use for your wardrobe. If you are wearing pale, summery colors, wear shoes that compliment. Black shoes will detract from your outfit. They will pull notice away from your ensemble and put the attention exactly where you don’t want it – on the ground.

There are two ways to look at shoes – leading actress or chorus. Certain outfits require your shoes to be part of the chorus. Pale dress, pale pants, pale shoes – it creates a finished look. Shoes should tie a wardrobe together for a clean daytime look. The time when you may want your shoes to play a leading role in the wardrobe is in the evening. Let’s say you have a dress that will look cute with flats during the day, but you can dress it up with heels at night. The heels you choose for the evening will have some sort of flourish to them – whether it’s sequins, bows, bright colors, feathers, straps, buckles, that’s up to you. Those are leading actress shoes. You want people to see your glamorous shoes because it adds pizzazz to your look. You will also choose jewelry that’s a bit bigger or flashier to really obtain that evening feel and to pull notice to your face, neck and waist (should you choose a belt).

Because there are so many wonderful footwear options this summer, go a little crazy. Invest in brighter, bolder colors, but please don’t wear black with pastels!

Walk the Walk

Have you heard about classes that teach women how to walk in high heels? This isn't a new trend. In Thailand, the average young woman takes modeling classes to improve her walking skills. (It is no wonder that Thailand has a tradition of beauty pageants both national and international.) The modeling class focuses on posture, poise, question and answer, and how to walk in high heels.

(Aside: I went to a summer camp where I took modeling classes in upstate NY given by a Dutch woman, and I still remember what I was taught. American women tend to walk with both their tummies and rear ends sticking out. A look that is quite unattractive. European women are taught to walk with their tummies sucked in and their rears pulled in - which naturally lifts the bust up and out slightly - not grossly but attractively - as it straightens the spine. We were also taught how to loosen our hips as we walk, which is completely different from shaking a fanny. We were instructed to, "Keep the wheels in motion" - the "wheels" being our hips. It's a very specific look and one that works well, or so I feel, given all the whistling and phone numbers I've received.)

As a girl, I used to clomp around in my mother's heels, as most children did. This is how I learned. You watch your parents, you emulate your parents, and you grow up possessing certain skills.

I always thought that the idea of a course designed for high heels was ridiculous. Have I made plunders in heels? Of course. I always attributed it to not paying attention.

The miraculous thing about high heels is the way your body language changes. Your walk becomes sexier. Your hips sway just a little bit more and you feel hot. If you are self conscious and not used to heels, you become stiff and very "not sexy." If anything, you look rigid. Maybe there is something to these classes!

I'd be interested to know how these classes have helped women. Also, are they geared for women whose mothers or fathers (what men do on the weekends God only knows) never wore heels?

With Gladiators Dominating, Is It Possible To Find Something For Our LBD?

My nickname is Imelda. My shoe collection is extensive. Yet, for some crazy reason, I don't own a pair of black, strappy sandals. I do have a beautiful pair of Armani high-heeled sandals with hand-painted soles, but I don't want to wear those everyday. In order to find a solution, and to prolong the shelf life of my beloved Armanis, I decided to visit my favorite store for everyday footwear - Cole-Haan.

I love their shoes but my recent trip yielded a poor outcome. I wanted strappy black sandals and purchased instead a pair of black "sneakers" and brown "Dawn" thongs. The only reason I purchased the thongs was that we share the same name. Gees, I have to stop the frivolous spending!

It was also disappointing that everything I liked I already owned (the store has decided to keep the same line for going on four seasons) and they hadn't any strappy, black sandals that fit my desires.

Is anyone making a pretty, simple, strappy sandal?

I decided to look elsewhere.

I ventured over to Stuart Weitzman. I always think that I'll like what I see if I go in one more time. Their shoes are still too schmaltzy. Some are too plain and others have so many embellishments (read rhinestones) that they look as though a Park Avenue hooker should be sporting them.

Jimmy Choos are gorgeous in the store in their perfect displays, but somehow they lose something in translation in the closet. They look less gorgeous and more impossible to wear. Feathers fall out and by the end of the evening your exquisite shoe is nothing but a well-made pump with glue and loose threads!

I found Manolo Mary Jane's on sale - but they were only in white - never a good color on a large foot. I wear a size 10.

Where are the strappy sandals? Apparently women with big feet are not supposed to have delicate heels and ankles. I have never had any luck with ankle straps or the like.

In short, I am still searching for the perfect pair of black dress sandals. Can ANYONE help me?
